Concept by PapsLab. Fennor Heating & Plumbing is a fictional business.

What changed
  • Starts with the real question: a "What's the boiler doing?" checker gives safe things to try first, when to call, and the call-out price. It works as a plain list without JavaScript.
  • The phone number is a real tap-to-call link in the header, with a Call button pinned to the bottom of the screen on phones.
  • Prices sit in one plain table: call-outs, annual services, and what gets a written quote.
  • Booking an annual service is one short form, with the fixed price shown before you start.
  • The seven towns are on a simple map and a "do you cover me?" check replaces the dead map widget.
  • The heat pump section says what to have ready and who does the SEAI paperwork, with no grant figures to go out of date.

Heating or hot water gone?

Tell us what the boiler’s doing. You’ll get what to check yourself, when to ring us and what a call-out costs. Two vans, based in Navan.

Call-out €90, VAT included. No fitting until you’ve agreed the price.

Smell gas? Don’t touch switches or flames. Open windows, leave the house and ring the Gas Networks Ireland emergency line from outside. Then ring us.

Fumes, soot or headaches near a running boiler? Switch it off, open windows and get outside.

What’s the boiler doing?

Pick the closest one. Each has what to check first and when to ring.

Radiators cold

Try these, then ring today.

  1. Check the programmer is set to heating on and turn the room thermostat a few degrees above the room. Wireless thermostat? Try fresh batteries.
  2. Is the boiler switched on and showing a light or a display? If the fuse board tripped, switch it back on once.
  3. Oil: look at the tank gauge. Running out in a cold snap is the most common one. Gas: check the hob lights. If it doesn’t, the problem is the supply, not the boiler.
  4. Check the pressure gauge. Under 1 bar and the boiler may have shut itself off (see low pressure).

Ring us if the boiler has power, fuel and pressure and the radiators are still cold, or it’s showing a red light or a code.

Taps run cold or lukewarm

Try these, then ring today.

  1. Check the hot water is set to on at the programmer, and give it half an hour to heat.
  2. If you have an immersion heater, its switch is separate from the boiler. Use it for a while to get hot water in the meantime, but don’t leave it on all day.
  3. Heating works but hot water doesn’t, or the other way round? Tell us which. It usually points straight at the fault.

Ring us if the water is still only lukewarm after an hour, or there’s water on or around the cylinder.

Pressure gauge reads low

Check first. Often a quick top-up.

0 1 1.5 2.5 4

Cold system: the needle should sit in the green, around 1 to 1.5 bar. This one’s too low.

  1. Under 1 bar: the boiler may stop to protect itself. If you’ve topped up before, use the filling loop (your manual shows where). Open slowly, watch the needle, close at about 1.2 bar. If you haven’t, don’t guess. Ring us.
  2. Needs topping up again within a few days? There’s a leak somewhere, and topping up only hides it.
  3. Needle climbing past 2.5 bar, or water dripping from a small pipe outside the house? Switch the heating off.

Ring us if it keeps dropping, it’s climbing too high, or you’d rather someone looked.

Banging, gurgling or kettle noises

Check first. Air is the usual suspect.

  1. Gurgling or ticking in the radiators means air. Bleed them with a radiator key, a cloth in hand, and close each valve as soon as water appears.
  2. Bleeding lowers the pressure, so check the gauge after (see low pressure).
  3. Banging or a kettle-like rumble from the boiler itself is often scale, sludge or low pressure. If it’s loud, switch the boiler off rather than running it hard for days.

Ring us if the noise comes back after bleeding and a pressure check, or there’s smoke, soot or a smell of fumes.

Water where it shouldn’t be

Switch off and ring now. Any hour.

  1. Switch the boiler and heating off. If water is coming fast, shut the main stopcock (often under the kitchen sink).
  2. Water near sockets, the fuse board or anything electrical? Keep away. Switch off at the board only if it’s dry and you can reach it safely.
  3. Bucket and towels under it, and take a photo of where it’s coming from. Text it to 087 000 0000 while you ring.

Ring us now. A leak is the one call we drop other things for. Out-of-hours price applies in the evening, on Sundays and bank holidays.

A code, a flashing light or a lockout

Note it, reset once, then ring.

  1. Take a photo of the display or lights. Write down the boiler make and model (it’s on the front or the data plate).
  2. Try the reset once, the way your manual describes. Once, not over and over.
  3. If it locks out again, ring with the photo in hand. A code often tells us what part to bring.

Ring us if the code comes back, or the boiler locks out at all on a cold morning.

Thinking about a heat pump?

We fit and service air-to-water heat pumps. Before anything else we come and look at the house, because a heat pump suits some houses well and others only after work on insulation or radiators. If yours isn’t ready, we’ll say so and tell you what would change that.

We handle the SEAI grant paperwork for you. Grant amounts and rules change, so we don’t print them here. Ask when you ring.

Have these to hand when you ask

  • What heats the house now: oil, gas or something else
  • Roughly how old the house is, and whether it’s insulated
  • Radiators, underfloor heating, or a mix
  • Your BER cert, if you have one

Do we cover your town?

Navan is home. These seven towns, and the roads between them, all get the same call-out price.

  • Navan
  • Trim
  • Kells
  • Athboy
  • Slane
  • Dunshaughlin
  • Ashbourne

Somewhere else? Ring and ask. If a van’s already out your way we may say yes, and you’ll hear the call-out price before we set off.
