Redesigns

The website you have.
The one you could have.

Eight Irish small businesses, each with the kind of site I see every week, and the same business rebuilt: fast on a phone, clear about prices and hours, and built around the one thing customers come to do.

The businesses are fictional. The towns are real, and so are the problems: every “before” is made from things that turn up on real Irish small-business sites. Photos are real places from Wikimedia Commons, credited on each page.

Village pub & kitchen · Ennistymon, Co. Clare

Quinlan's Bar & Kitchen

A pub site that answers “is the kitchen open and is there a session tonight?” from the real clock, with the menu as plain text and a table booked by one tap on the phone.

  • A “Tonight at Quinlan’s” board reads the day and time and says if the kitchen is open, when last food orders are, and whether there is a session. Without JavaScript it shows the full week.
  • The menu is real text on the page with prices, so it is searchable, translatable and readable on a phone.
  • Session nights and times are listed day by day, with a note on who can sit in.

Bed & breakfast on the Greenway · Newport, Co. Mayo

Furnace Lough House

Shows the five rooms with real prices, lets guests see which rooms are free on which nights, and sends the request straight to the owners instead of a booking site.

  • Every room has its price for both seasons in one table, breakfast and VAT included, so nobody has to ask.
  • A date picker shows five bars under each night, one per room, so you see what is free before you write.
  • Pick dates and the page lists the rooms free for those nights with the total, then drafts a request to the owners.

Heating & plumbing firm · Navan, Co. Meath

Fennor Heating & Plumbing

Opens with the question a cold house asks, "what's the boiler doing?", and answers it with safe things to try, when to call and what the call-out costs.

  • Starts with the real question: a "What's the boiler doing?" checker gives safe things to try first, when to call, and the call-out price. It works as a plain list without JavaScript.
  • The phone number is a real tap-to-call link in the header, with a Call button pinned to the bottom of the screen on phones.
  • Prices sit in one plain table: call-outs, annual services, and what gets a written quote.

Neighbourhood barbershop · Phibsborough, Dublin 7

Basin Barbers

A three-chair barbershop site that shows today's free times, a real price list and the opening hours before anything else.

  • A "Today in the chairs" board shows each barber's free times for today as tappable slots, with the next free one highlighted.
  • The price list is plain text with the student, kids and OAP rates in it, next to the cut it applies to.
  • Opening hours are a table that marks today, with late Thursday called out, and a status line that says open or closed right now.

Physiotherapy clinic · Douglas, Cork

Ravenswood Physiotherapy

Opens with a tap-the-spot body map that answers "can you help with my problem?" and ends in a booking request, with prices and the insurance answer on the page.

  • A "Where does it hurt?" body map: tap the knee, neck or lower back and see what the physios usually treat there, what the first session involves and roughly how many visits to expect.
  • The same answers work as plain linked sections with JavaScript off.
  • Prices, 60-minute first assessment, receipts for insurance claims and "no GP referral needed" are stated up front, without quoting any insurer's benefits.

Accountancy practice · Clonmel, Co. Tipperary

Slievenamon Accounts

Replaces a mission statement and a Links page with a pick-your-type fee finder: your fixed annual fee, what it covers, what to bring and what happens when.

  • A "Which one are you?" fee finder replaces the mission statement: farmer, sole trader, landlord, small company or side income, each with a fixed fee from the first screen.
  • Every type gets its own printable checklist of what to bring, so nobody phones to ask.
  • The year is laid out by season for each type, so autumn is not a surprise.

Surf school · Bundoran, Co. Donegal

Tullan Strand Surf School

A lesson finder that turns who's coming and how much surfing they've done into the right lesson, the group price, the kit list and the next sessions.

  • A lesson finder: add who's coming (ages) and ability, and get the lesson, the price for the group, what to bring and the next sessions.
  • Prices are a real table, sorted by who the lesson is for, and the same table is the whole answer when JavaScript is off.
  • Real photos of Tullan Strand on a grey day replace the dead video; the page is small enough to load on one bar of signal.

Family butcher & deli counter · Thomastown, Co. Kilkenny

Dysart Family Butchers

Turns the Christmas order from a Word form you print into a docket you fill in on your phone: how many at the table, what size bird, which day to collect.

  • A Christmas order docket that works like the paper one on the counter: number of people suggests a turkey, crown or ham size, adds extras, picks a collection day and keeps a running total.
  • Without JavaScript the same page still gives a plain Christmas price list and says phone or call in, so nobody is locked out.
  • Today's opening hours show at the top and update from the real clock (open now, or when we open next); the full week is always on the page.
